yea thats what i do too, it may be an issue which is not very serious, but still, this isnt an inspiron this is a precision. for the amount paid, i think its unacceptable to have to work around software issues!

for a month or so after launch i guess its acceptable, but like i said, its been almost a whole quarter! thats practically a lifetime in the computer world

Understood. I always hibernate my machine anyway...I've turned off sleep altogether now anyway. But, point taken!

Ah, the eternal question. To hybernate or to sleep. Depending who I talk to, either one of them is great or terrible. I have learned the hard way to save all of my work before using either one.

I agree that all of those issues should have been ironed out by now. Usually after the first quarter we are supposed to deal with battery recalls or faulty gpu chips, not driver issues. ;)

Hey all, I am hopefully getting my M4400 tomorrow and I have a 320gb drive that is ready to go in which I am planning on installing Vista 64. What is the best way of creating a clean Vista install. Can I use my Microsoft Vista Ultimate retail disc with the serial included from dell, or does the dell have an option for just installing Vista rather then the Dell image with all the bloat ware? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

well there isnt really any bloatware on the dell. DCP which is dell's version of ThinkVantage has the drivers and software to run the more proprietary parts of the system like the light sensor, security hardware etc.

also, the system is very sensitive to the order you install the drivers in.

you can find the order here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/top...0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&doclang=en&cs=#2

these are the first dell systems i've seen that are so fussy about driver installation. so dont go installing them in random order

    Hi all,

I see you are talking about hibernation but I am wondering that on my machine, the hibernate / hybrid-sleep-mode is not available even with the latest chipset-driver installed. Can you confirm that there are both modes standby and hibernate available on your machine?

Another question is regarding the smartcard-reader: In my system-logs there is an error-event, indicating a problem with my smartcard-reader. Its event-ID is 610 and has been generated during chipset driver installation. It says that the device "Broadcom Corp Contacted SmartCard 0" rejected IOCTL GET_STATE and therfore has been deleted. Anyway, the device manager still lists a USB-smartcard-reader as before driver installation. Do you have the error in your logs? Can I ignore the problem as the device works anyway? Do you know of any way how to test the device without a smartcard for Windows-authentication?

Finally let me write some words on my lappy (and especially the RGB-LED display) arrived two weeks ago: I'm pretty happy with it. Nice performance, noise level is OK, and the glare WUXGA RGB-LED is great. Even working outside on a sunny day should be no problem at all because of its amazing brightness. Yes, I didn't test it outside (it might be too frosty for the device) but working in the winter-garden with a bright sun directly shining in the room hasn't been a problem for the display albeit for my eyes blended by the sun:) Having the sun / light source in the your back is not advisable but even possible if the source is not directly shining on the glare screen so that it is visible on the screen itself; but with a slight change of position it should be easy to be accomplished having it out of the screen.
Finally I will stay with the glare display. The resolution is also prefect to me even if I'm not a graphic designer or a professional in multimedia businesses.

Thanks to the great forum especially to janik_dk and his helpfull answers to my questions.

Go to the command prompt icon in the Start menu under Accessories and right click the icon: click "Run as administrator".

Then either type "powercfg /hibernate on" or "powercfg -h on" and hit enter. (Without quotes)

    there you go!

Thanks for your impressions, could you please post some pics of the screen? The internet has not a single photo of the M4400 RGB-LED :(
