Oh well... Like I said, I don't have mine yet. Maybe others like LPTP-LVR or I♥RAM will have some suggestions. There is also a Downclocking thread that discusses some of the problems you mentioned here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=308562

getting pretty annoyed with my M4400....first the power adaptor gives way, then the paint starts wearing off....now i find out i have a faulty LCD with image persistence problems....

and i think i may have the lockup issue as well. happened to me twice so far....not as often as some others with it happening very regularly, but still really annoying. im probably going to call dell and ask them to replace the unit...its less than 2 months old.....and so many issues already...

dosent give me much confidence in dell...i thought as their top of the line business laptop i would have no problems with my precision

starting to miss my lowly spec but rock solid D410

If you have an overactive fan, you should use HWmonitor to monitor your idle temperatures and report them back here. It's likely that a) your system is overheating and/or b) your systems bottom vent is suffering from poor air circulation. I'm on BIOS A02 and I don't experience any fan problems or downclocking. My fan goes crazy if I block my vents and put it on load. But if it truly is overheating for no reason, you can get it replaced.

@afhsting: Do you have one of the newer M4400s or the older ones?

Tough to say, since I got my new one late November w/ thermal paste instead of pads and an AU Optronics LCD. It might be worth the replacement.

I hate to beat a dead horse but has anyone managed to get the black Latitude lid cover for their M4400. If not does anyone know if it can be bought separately?

I already did with 18fanGUI: on idle, the CPU is about 30 degrees, the GPU 43, memory 45, Chipset 44 and harddisk 35. Too low for a fan to kick in I should say...

I've found recently IK8FanGUI shows my temperatures 10C lower than what HWmonitor shows, and have decided to stop using that software. Try removing I8K and see if it fixes anything. And then report the temps with HWmonitor.

    Hmmm, I see. HWMonitor reports:
    THM_: 37
    Core 1/2: 31/32
    GPU: 52
    HDD: 36.

So the GPU reading of HWmonitor is significantly higher...
