    Yup, what was said above. Dell ControlPoint is for the first and second generation E-series, third-generation E-series needs to use Dell Data Protection | Access.

    On my M4600, Dell Data Protection Access was pre-installed and I'm currently using it to set up the fingerprint reader for Windows login without any problems. There is a newer version on the Dell Drivers and Downloads website, but considering the difficulties people seem to be having with it, I haven't gotten the nerve to upgrade it. Did your M4600 not come with Dell Access installed or did you remove the software or reinstall the OS?

    I have to agree that Dell could not have made this more convoluted if they tried. When I go into Dell Access Advanced / Devices, there is a selection for ControlVault, which is not even installed on the computer. Yet it's on the Dell Drivers and Downloads website and supposedly compatible with the M4600. Dell really needs to get their act together on this.

    My specs for the M4600 is in the sig.

    When running furmark + prime95, the cpu experiences some serious throttling.

    When running both cores, the top speed with turbo boost is 3.2ghz with 1.191v. However a few minutes, it will throttle all the way down to 800MHz with 0.826v. It will stay throttled and reach full speed again after a few minutes. This is a cycle.

    this machine is supposed to handle the i7 extreme which uses about 20w more in full load. So i am really surprised to find out that even with the high end machines, you cant have both components running at max.

    Sure the prime 95+furmark is very extreme condition, but with some applications I use, the gpu is in 100% constantly. That means that if the same application demands over 80% of cpu usage for a period of time, it will throttle down so much and with the vicious cycle. This will definitely happen in the future with more demanding applications and games.

    At this moment, this could be a bios problem. Perhaps a new bios could fix this problem as I do not think this is a power problem with the 180w ac adaptor.

    Please tell me what you guys have been experiencing. It is very disappointing to know that a $3000 machine throttles this bad. :mad: :mad:

    CPU throttle under prime95 because of overheating. M4600 fan is not capable to handle it.

    Screenshot of my earlier prime95 test, stress the CPU alone and rest the GPU in peace. 90C during the test. Definitely the system needs to throttle the speed down. And you add more juice on GPU stress~ Ohh yeah the M4600 screams.

    My cpu does not go over 83 degrees even after prolonged prime95.

    After prolonged session of prime 95 and furmark

    cpu= 83 degrees is MAX
    gpu= 73 degrees is MAX

    I do not think 83 degrees is any temp considered high.

    And well I did overclock my gpu to 770mhz/1080 mhz memory. And yes I see no throttling when in stock clock.

    I am baffled to see how gpu power can effect cpu performance. Even with the turbo boost disabled, there is throttling.

    Perhaps 80 degrees is considered hot by dell standards?

    And when just running the prime 95, i get no throttling. the throttling is only there when gpu is at 100% load. Maybe this is more of a power issue than heat?

    I can't find it but on the Intel site i think the chips limit for the Extreme edition was around 120C so you still safe. Not sure about the throttling.

    @Dellienware Just curious is the ambient temperature at your place is about 22-23C ? Mine is close to 30... If you have dockstation 210W brick maybe can use that to try again?

    @boss428man 120C for CPU...? i don think leaving CPU temperature anyway close to 90C a comfortable one.

    my room temp is around 25c. i done have the dockstation ATM.

    I think the cpus can handle up to 100, but we should really see 90 as max for safety.

    At this point i think it is more power issue than heat for ME. Not sure how to go about fixing this.

    Anyone else?

    Re-run the tests with the 240 or 210 watt adapter that came with your Alienware.

    i already tried with the 240w. still the same issue

    35w + 80w (55w base but assuming around 80w due to oc) is still 115w, WELL UNDER 180w.. hmm
    Anyone else? Anything else I should try?
