Not a foolish question, but yes I did- based on the other thread here on the forum. Given the problems I had getting this laptop in the first place (I had an XPS on order first and after 3 delays I canceled and went with this one) I'd hate to have to send it back for hardware issues.

Another question, I know a lot of people are monitoring the internal temps. What do you guys suggest are the best software tools to do that?

Just from the feel test, my Covet seems to get the warmest in the area right around the hinge, the bottom of the lcd and the speaker area. I assume that is appropriate, since the vents are in the back. Is that the way it should be?

Hmmm- it's nice and zippy for me. Have you tried changes the scratch disk to another drive? That helped a lot for me.

You can run them off your Drivers and Diagnostic disk that "should" have come with your system.

The rear right and left sides are points where the air is being output so yes. This is normal. The GPU is on the right, the CPU is on the left, closer to the center.

First things first. Snag your diagnostics CD and run the diagnostics on your video and audio. See if that comes back with anything.

SiliconAddict, thanks for the info. RSiggs, running the diagnostics is a good bet. Though I do think the diagnostics is a bit flawed. Like my afore-mentioned error with not being able to access the lcd edid eeprom. I have also encountered an error while testing the keyboard mapping. The diagnostics insist the lower volume button is wrongly mapped, when it works fine to control the volume. I hope the not being able to access the lcd edid eeprom is also just a mistake on the diagnostics part.

Two things. Check Dell's site for a newer version of the diagnostics or a BIOS update. I've seen similar behavior before. Either when the BIOS and the diagnostics are mismatched or when the diagnostics simply are too old and don't know about the hardware yet. I've seen instances where the diags can't see the WIFI card and a BIOS update took care of it.

Hi there, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their M6400: When I install the Windows XP (32 bit) driver for NVidia Quadro FX 2700, I can no longer establish Remote Desktop connections to the laptop. If I roll back to the generic VGA driver, Remote Desktop works fine. Running Server 2003 (32 bit).

I ended up grabbing the NVidia 180.48 driver from laptopvideo2go.com and added the modified INF file to allow installation of the FX 2700 device. Remote desktop works correctly with that driver. Who knows how long it will take Dell to update the driver on their site though.

i am having the same issues...if you go back and read my previous posts, that will explain my problems, pretty much the same as yours though. after a few repair jobs and sending my machine back to get fixed, they are now sending me a new machine as a replacement. even after they fixed my computer, i am having the same issues with the graphics card it turns out. it cannot sustain a load for a while as it crashes whenever i am working on a heavy 3d model in 3ds max. i hope it is just a problem with this machine and not my new one because the computer is great without the crashes. same problems with the audio too.
