    lol,

there are no compatibility reasons these days, 64bit vista has no issues running 32 bit aps!

Why limit yourself to a 32 bit os when there is no need?

    :)

Are you saying that Vista 64 is completely compatible with all 32 bit apps? I hadn't heard this, so I ordered the 32bit versions.

That's not true unfortunately. Plus there's no real disadvantage with 32-bit Windows unless you've got more than 4GB (otherwise it pretty much balances out). In my case I care about being able to run some fairly recent games that shipped with 16-bit installers, and also Gametap, which needs 32-bit Windows for many of it's games to work. (Technically for work I need a 16-bit subsystem too, though I could always run that through VirtualPC.)

But at any rate, anyone have answers to any of those questions? I'm not even sure what version of Vista ships with it...it doesn't say :(

I shouldn't get this anyway. $5600+ for the config I did, and that doesn't even include Blu Ray...but I don't see any other options to get high end hardware with an LED backlight :(

I ordered mine with 64-bit Vista, so I'm glad to hear this. But now I'm just wondering if I should have got the 64-bit XP downgrade. I got my wife a Vista tablet a couple months ago, our first Vista machine, and it has been nothing but a headache. She has IP v6 issues with wif-i, blue screens, and sound problems.

Is there any significant advantage to Vista 64 over XP 64?

Wolfpup, iirc, if you just config it on their web, it's 32 bit vista or xp... if you want 64 bit, you need to get on the phone and specify.

either case, i would call and confirm with them regardless... and get an e-mail confirmation.

That's good to know. I kind of figured if they don't specify, it should just be 32-bit by default, buy ya never know.

That's not correct though. For many people 64-bit will be fine, but it's by no means 100% compatible.

No, absolutely not. 64-bit XP was more of a testbed for the Vista releases than something we'd want to use.

If you wanted to use XP, you'd want 32-bit XP. If you want 64-bit, you'd want Vista.

Those issues sound like driver issues. 64-bit XP was never "ready for prime time". 64-bit Vista is much more of a real option-just not for everyone yet.

I guess there are still some programs that need it. For most people Vista's fine though. Personally I like Vista fine from what I've gotten to use of it so far.

I just transitioned from Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Vista Ultimate 64 bit with my covet. I did this primarily for the extra ram that I can utilize in x64. I have only come across two applications that did not install or ran all goofy. One was a free/old/cheap .RA to .MP3 converter (ran goofy but works) and a Cisco VPN client (won't install). I'm still trying to figure out what I can do for the VPN client.. that is kinda a big deal. Adobe CS3 (32bit) runs like a champ with 8 GB ram. :D

On a side note, the glossy RGB LED screen on my covet is giving me a headache. My eyes are constantly focusing on the overhead lights in my client's office that reflect off the super glossy display. My old M90's matte display was so much better in this regard. However, the color is SOO much better on the covet. In my home office, where I have total control over my lighting- the screen is perfect.
