I'm happy to report that Sins of a Solar Empire runs smoothly on this machine. I never expected that, so this is a bonus.

have a question for all the Vostro 1220 owners out there, how well does the audio work on your laptop? Are music balanced and clear for both ears?

Granted the machine only has one speaker built-in, however, when you have a pair of earphones plugged in, is the sound balanced and equally clear on both ears? for me, the eight channel always sounds weak and muffled, no matter how I tweak the audio settings.

I'll give that a try tomorrow. You are right the single speaker is not so hot but I doubt that the sound quality is what people are buying this for. I have a set of pretty nice Koss earbuds that give good sound on my desktop so that will be my reference.

I ran the Vista stereo settings test and then some older rock music that has widely separated stereo left and right channels and both the left and right were clear and distinct. So, no issues here (with earbuds).

Just got a brand new Vostro 1220 -

    Specs:

    Windows 7 Pro/XP Pro
    T9550 Processor
12" Truelife (I love this screen)
    4GB 800MHZ DDR2 RAM
    Intel 5100 Wireless
    Bluetooth

I can't be more excited about this - I'm planning to game a little bit (Rome: Total War primarily) on this incredibly good (and cheap!) computer.

Price? $1150 shipped to my door ;)

Congrats...I'm a strategy gamer and I was totally pleased when I found out my Sins of a Solar Empire runs smoothly and looks good too. I really didn't expect this bonus. It's a great laptop....I'm on it now, been neglecting my Precision m4400 :)

It's amazing what a powerful and compact laptop can do - I loved the 700m for it's versatility (and movie capability - best portable DVD player ever!), and the 1220 does all that and adds gaming.

    I couldn't be happier.

Really? Could you listen again in a quiet environment and listen carefully?

I am with my second Vostro 1220 now, they all have the same audio problem: the left channel is louder than the right channel when the balance is being set in the middle.

I have to turn up the volume on the right channel to compensate, problem is, the setting doesn't stick, you have to adjust it every time. Very uncomfortable!

I just checked, twice, and this one definitely does not have that problem. Sorry for asking, but has someone else heard the same variation in volume? I've got my card set at 48000hz btw (doesn't matter for this)
