I fixed my touchpad problem. I had updated the touchpad driver, but that did not do anything.

I uninstalled the touchpad driver, restarted the machine (probably didn't need to do that but what the heck) and then installed the new, updated driver I downloaded. Seems that a fresh install instead of an update worked.

Viola!!! I now have a perfect machine. :D

    Thanks everyone.

I meant the plastic that coes around the keyboard and the touchpad.

I found that Dell actually had a guide to disassemble the 1220 to bits - witch was nessecary to get to the HDD.

I am not able to post it here for others that might have the same problem, but PM me and i'll give a hint.

Yesterday I decided to install Ubuntu netbook edition on my machine, and I must say it works perfectly. No hassle of drivers or anything works great. Works great and side by side to Windows 7

    Touchpad STILL Freezes!
Please post here if you also have this problem
I originally posted about this problem in this thread on 07-27-2010.

    PROBLEM
    The touchpad intermittently freezes.
This can occur at any time - you may be in the middle of dragging an icon or scrolling when all of a sudden the touchpad becomes unresponsive sometimes for mutliple seconds.
I am a heavy User of the touchpad and this issue has a major impact on my use of this laptop as I have to keep re-selecting dropped icons and\or move the mouse pointer back up to re-select the scrollbar I was dragging in Word etc.

I would like to here from any other Vostro 1220 owners who have encountered this problem as I believe it is a design fault with this machine and would like to collect evidence from other owners so i can go to Dell and as them to either rectify or compensate use for this problem
See below for details of failed solutions I have tried.

Solutions tried but failed to resolve
After encountering the above problem I have tried:
    1. Reducing the "TouchCheck" setting to minimum (helps a little)
    2. Disabling touchcheck.
    3. Trying many different touchpad sensitivity and other settings.
    4. Installing "latest" Windows 7 32bit Vostro 1220 touchpad driver v7.2.101.220. (My Vostro was supplied with a latter v7.2.101.221 but this is not available for download)
    5. Getting Dell to install a brand new touchpad.
    6. Removing the touchpad driver altogether and just using the W7 default mouse driver.
The fact that the problem still occurs withOUT a touchpad driver suggests to me that there is something "electrically" wrong with the touchpad design.
Please post here if you have the same problem as I would like to build a case re this problem and submit it to Dell for a response.

    Thanks
    Nigel
