I agree on the comments above, except for one - for me, the palm rest with the toshiba 320 GB hd gets pretty toasty (right side). I should bring a thermal gun from work and get the exact temp. The bottom is really cool however.

Another thing about the wifi, mine didn't come with it either case the rep stated they should all come with it. Mine was shipped and is coming soon as well, however it won't really be used since I put in the 6300 one instead.

The fan is quiet (at times) and usually always on, but I expected it to be like that (desktop with nearly the same hardware).

    Fully Agree !
On the new Studio 17, the FAN is completly stopped and kick on at nearly full speed for a few seconds then stop again. Believe me guys, when the FAN constantly kicks ON and OFF, it makes you rapidly crazy and that's highly disturbing when working in a quiet place.

On my old Inspiron 510m, the FAN spins all the time at a low speed and only spin up according to the workload. it's a dream !
I avoid all my further purchase of New Studio 17 because of the FAN behaviour and fortunatly, Vostro 3x00 fan management seems to be much more clever. From a design point of view, Temperature is by far better managed this way (keeps "on average temperature" rather than up and down temperature).

How do I find what connection the 3400 display uses to connect to the motherboard other than buying one and opening it up?

I want to see if it shares the same connection as my 14z's 1600x900 LED lit display for a possible transplant.

    OK guys...
I just found a review on ACER TIMELINE X laptop that utilise INTEL's iDST technology with the Core-i processors. Seems that the battery life can be increased by some percentage.

    Here's the link:-

Perhaps fellow early adopters of the new Vostros and Latitudes with Core-i processors can share some experience?

the flex in the KB looks minimal to me. its really only the lid that worries me now. even the fan issue, well if its not really noisy who cares?

The keyboard looks like the same backlit keyboard on my 14z. The keyboard flex doesn't affect the performance of the keyboard. It just looks cheap and of lesser quality. I may try to take it out and reinforce the bottom side to prevent the flexing.

Request: pci-e port layout for Vostro 3400

Wondering if a Vostro 3400 owner could volunteer the pci-e port numbers in the Vostro 3400. To do that just run Everest->Motherboard->Southbridge for the wifi in the first slot, then swap it in the second slot and check what it comes up in Everest. Like shown here for a HP DV4.

The purpose of this investigation is to see if there is a port1+port2 combo, so could do a high performance x2 1.0 DIY ViDock.
