Vista finally exploded for the last time on me so I installed W7 RC1 (7100) on this E6400.

I got things functioning pretty well so far.

Now it turns out that a lot of the crashes in Vista were due to bad interaction between a USB driver (therefore Microsoft's problem, according to the Dell engineer I chatted with for a few hours Sunday night). We don't know if the same issues will occur in W7, but so far, no BSODs.

good times -- id just seen you do it on this and the e6400 owners forum lounge, and the above post didn't seem to be bad (i guess that is because it was deleted) -- I am used to there being a post remaining that says [deleted by administrator] or whatever. lol, anyway...

has anyone had consistent crashing problems, especially when using media, like youtube and skype. I can't install the video drivers from intel on W 7. I am afraid is either an audio or video driver problem.

I have been able to install the intel driver without a problem here. It is from Microsoft:

Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - Prerelease 1.1)

I've been running Windows 7 (64 bit - build 7100) here for a few days, which has been a very good improvement over Vista 64. Only one quibble - sometimes when the machine awakens from sleep, it waits for a while and anything related to the network connection is unresponsive for a time ranging from maybe 20 seconds to a minute. Other than that - Windows 7 is a great stability improvement over Vista 64. Like night and day.

Would the backlit keyboard work fine in Win7? I'm not sure if that's something that requires a driver, but I'm thinking of installing Win7 on an E6400.
