I read some XPS owners had problems with guys coming to them not knowing how to take the laptop apart. But in general I'd like to avoid any contact with support as this means several weeks without the laptop which I need for everyday work and entertainment. How fast is the replacement for you?

Well with the m4400 we get NBD support...not having to send it anywhere. Just a tech guy coming over to replace or fix the issue the day after you call it in. Ofcourse...i never leave them out of my sight while theyre working on it ;)

Cool :) And may I ask how many times did you call in for a technician to your M4400? I'm looking for a configuration much like yours -did you experience any problems with it?

Yeah i did...some specific to my use, others down to bad quality.

    In short:
I thought the WUXGA screen looked terrible so asked for a replacement caus i thought it was defective somehow. Got the replacement which looked just as bad (also me being very picky with screens and expecting quality on this workstation system)

When using the PCMCIA cardbus my wireless got disabled every time. Tech had a look at it and by doing so somehow damaged the chassis which made it impossible to screw the bottom cover tight (bottom cover is now held with 2 pieces of tape;) )

Dodgy Displayport connector which is the reason i'm getting a mobo replacement tomorrow

After that they'll have to stop by to replace the chassis.

All is done fast but it's getting way too much now.

Still i believe it is actually a really good system when some issues get resolved, with all my (personal) issues with it i'd still recommend it. Also due to the good support

Whoa... that is a long list, and you did not have the lock up or throttle problems which are reported by others. If it turned out dell support in Poland is not as good as yours in the US... Well, I'll see what Driven0 and I-RAM will say over the weekend about their issues. Thanks!

Didn't have the lockup no and going to try Crysis to see if the throttle issue exists here. I'm not in the US but in The Netherlands....closer by but service could be different ofcourse. The Dell office is in Amsterdam about 500m from my house so i can always pay them a visit in person if necessary ;)

For people not in the US, I have no clue how the support is. Pro support is very flexible and usually fast. You call in as much you need to. Usually once does the trick for each issue (it's better to go to hardware chat though, since your service tag is set up and relocates faster than phone - and the people who chat can call your phone one request).

You've had far better luck than I have. It's taken us 4 weeks to FINALLY get *1* of the replacement systems delivered. (Not doubting you, but it's hit or miss when dealing with the support techs.)

FWIW: This new system has been stable for the first 12 hours of usage. Not a single crash. I migrated my data yesterday and choose to reinstall the apps. (I didn't want to chance that I had some software badness that would follow me to the new machine.)

Only complaint: The new unit has an LG display panel instead of a Samsung. It's a noticable difference, not as bright and the colors don't "pop" as much, but you know what? I'll live with it for the stability. If this plays out without any crashes I'll be confirming that this issue has to do with faulty hardware.

I'm going to be posting experiences with the laptop over the weekend on my twitter feed if anyone wants to follow me. http://twitter.com/shedmyskin

(I am reposting this message in the E6400 thread for those interested over there.)
