My vostro arrived 2 days ago. all good, no complaints here. i got the wxga anti-glare, no graininess. and the battery could be a tad loose, but nothing a piece of electrical tape to tighten it can't fix. and with my own headphones, no weird noises.

    very happy camper.

With my 1700, I have a 50/50 chance the Bluetooth device won't 'wake up' out of sleep.

With the onboard sound, it has little drop-outs whenever playing anything in any player, including Windows Media Player.

Windows Vista absolutely, beyond a doubt, SUCKS.

I LOATHE DELL FOR SHIPPING VISTA AT ME.

No recovery media. A couple of driver CDs for the miscellaneous parts in the machine. No Windows CD. No bootable recovery CD. A recovery partition that's visible for normal operation, but heck, if the boot drive dies, it takes that with it. Goody. Better buy some drive imaging software if you get one. You're definitely up **** creek if something happens to Windows and it won't boot anymore.

This will be my first Vista experience. I hope it's not as bad as you make it sound.

The Europeans get their Vostros straight from Shannon, Ireland. Some thousand miles less to ship.... ;)

Rumours are, though, that Dell is building a new factory in Poland, starting to deliver in Q3/2007. I assume that we in Germany will get our Dells from Poland, then.

Get speedfan (cpu temp reading) http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
What is the temperature reading idle and when its running 100%?

Where is it hot? It's not actually a bad thing you can feel how hot the laptop gets, it means the heat is dissipating :)

Speedfan is not the best temperature monitoring program.

It isn't. It's different, and nags you a bit about installing stuff. It also stores things differently, eg you can't mess with Program Files. I've had no software or hardware problems except the free scanning software that came with a Canon Printer, and I blame Canon for that as it's a new model, there's no excuse for them not including software that will work on Vista.
Doug (oh, I got mine 9 days ahead of schedule).
