I ordered a vostro and my family does own a small business. So ha!
I don't really do all that much for the business, and I told the sales rep on the phone that I would mainly be using this laptop for home and school work with a little bit of work thrown in. She didn't really care. I could have been making the business up as well, since she didn't ask for any information on it.
PS. if anyone needs some car parts for german cars, we can sell you some!

    i have a question...

i got the upgrade to one day shipping through the dell chat but on my order status page it says DHL EXPRESS GROUND.

Ive heard that the webpage doesnt update or something but have actually gotten via one day... yet it says GROUND...
i cant check the tracking number yet cause it JUST shipped today.

i would be very irritated if the dell rep lied to me...

Thanks a lot for the replies; are you sure however, that they won't ask for any Tax ID number, or some other legal piece of information?

I've set my mind on a Vostro 1000 with XP, for about $690, 3-year McAfee subscription included.

I don't mean to clutter the Vostro lounge or anything----but can anyone comment on that particular model? What could be a good alternative to it, at the same price range?

They didn't when we ordered on the phone. If you order online you just get "business name" or something to that effect. I ordered the day before online (but it got lost by dell) and it had nothing like tax ID. However I put "home" for the business and that could have resulted in it getting "lost". Really though just put in something that sounds real if your worried about it. Johns fish factory for instance would be fine.

Oh can you give us the specs on the vostro you are looking at.

Posting on my new 1700, I had to pick it up at the DHL hub since I wasn't home when they came by today.

Anyway, I love the notebook. It's big, but not nearly as big and heavy as I thought I it would be. I need 10 key for spreadsheets at work. I have a mental block finding numbers on the keyboard. The screen is great and I don't notice any reflection while working on it normal light. You can see if it you look for it, but once you start working you don't notice it (at least I don't).

I'll write more after I have played around with it. First impression is really really good though.

It's really nice to have the same rez on my laptop as I have on my desktop.

    AMD Athlon TK-53 (1.7Ghz/512K)
    XP Home
    1 GB Ram, 2 dimm
    Ati Radeon Hypermemory Integrated Graphics
    80 GB HDD
    DVD-CD RW
    6-cell Battery
    3 year McAfee subscription

Price under Smart Value ($145 instant discount): $648
    Free Ground Shipping, +Tax: $694

I'm a student, and the above rig is perfect for my purposes. There's the higher education discount for the Inspiron series alright----but they force Vista on you, which means that it's impossible to cut back on ram and hdd, or even the cpu. I know that XP will run perfect with the above setting, but I can't feel confident about Vista even on much stronger rigs----I have a phobia for bloatware.

I just hate it that the simplest operations (opening a pdf file; convincing a control panel window which apparently suffers from screen-fright to actually show up; BOOTING [?!] up the computer!) take literally minutes, just because the OS, and the antivirus software work behind your back killing system resources. Worst of all, Linux and Mac aren't real alternatives for me either; the first due to compatibility issues, and the latter, because I abominate the huge profit margins Apple impose on customers.

    Got my 1400 today.

First thing I did was load Vista Home Premium and so far so good. It is running great. Now I just need to load all my progs and move over some files and I'll be good to go.

And pick up 2GB of ram in the next sale.

Dang, when I saw that I thought I could show you a much better deal on the 1500. I didn't realize the smart value on the 1500 has changed so much after their last sale ended. http://www.dell.com/content/product...nb_1500?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~tab=bundlestab Check it out anyway, it's got double the hard drive space and a core 2 duo which is supposed to be better then the AMDs. All for one dollar more.

    Hello to all.

I was doing some research on these Dell Vostros (1500, specifically) and had a couple of questions:

    1. How does the 8600GT do at WSXGA+ resolution? How are BF2, CS:S, and Oblivion?

    2. What is a 'grainy' screen, and if I recieve a 'grainy unit', will Dell replace it?

    3. How is the build quality on these units? Are the keyboard and touch pad any good? Also, is it really a fingerprint magnet? I hate fingerprints!

    4. How does this notebook's performance stack up to a Precision M70 (the other notebook I was looking at, for it's build quality)

My config would probably be something like this:
    2 GHz Core 2 Duo
    2 GB RAM
    8600 GT

This notebook would be used for general tasks, typing papers, and gaming.

Any tips on some coupons wouldn't hurt either :)

And finally, do you guys feel satisfied with your purchase?

Thanks for helping out a noob!
