i have a router and modem in one. it has no password and no firewall. i called dell and verizon and talked on the phone for over 4 hours and nothing was solved. i went to my friend's house and it worked!! he has linkysis by the way. i just came back and it doesnt work. i guess the dell wireless card is not compatible with the free modem and router in one provided by verizon. i have the westell 327w.

you probably didn't turn on wireless networking on the router, they are usually of by default for security reasons.

You could get a cheap router and daisy chained it onto your all in one router that would fix it. You should be able to pick up an old 802.11b router for cheap nowdays.

F*¤%... to get a better price I called Dell and asked if it was possible to cancel my order that had been postponed for 3 weeks (delivery August 21).

That 'should' be OK according to the sales rep but I was convinced to cancel it before I placed a new order. I really pushed my idea that I may keep my old since I could encounter a long delivery on the new order. When I now log I see in red letters that there is a six week delivery time... I am very, very, very unhappy with Dell right now. They could not stop the cancelled order either.

I will try every avenue to not buy a Vostro 1400 now and will have to convince myself that I do not want 1) bland design 2) loose fitting battery. I do not believe the 'grainy' screen would have bothered me.

What has been your competitor laptops in the same price range as the 1400? I want a 14" laptop with 1440x900 res (NOT 1280x800), 2GB RAM, ok GPU and ~160GB HD, built-in webcam and mic, Blutetooth and some more. HDMI would be very nice.
