so.. the day came where I at last got my M4400.

At last i've installed my things on it (CS4, fonts, anti virus, drivers and so).. so I'll share my thoughts about it before jumping to bed.

Build quality is absolutely great - very solid.
. also it makes a lot less noise than my previous E6500..
The performance in programs like photoshop and acrobat are good - pretty fast.

    The screen..
It's alot brighter than my previous E6500 (WLED) - and the glossy look really don't brothers me - makes it look a bit exclusive hehe:)

I have now calibrated the screen and took this picture:
1000 x 1000 px RGB document with rainbow Gradient.
(please notice - the brithness of the M4400 is at 100 % - for some reason i could suddenly not change it after i pluged and un-pluged the power-supply - i tried a restart and some white flashes would occur in the start-up-process - still i was not able to change the brightness until i shut down the M4400. then the white flashes disapeared and i could control the brightness again..)

Still there are some things to be fixed:
i can't used the build-in mobile broadboard - it needs to "activated" in some way..
Wlan doesn't work properly either - might be due to my router (my previous E6500 also got problems there..)

This machine will only be used for graphical work - so I don't really care if it downclocks after 1 hour of Call Of Duty hehe - this machine will probably never play one single game. Therefore the screen must be the best possible and the machine itself stable... I do not want to waste my time trying to get a 3600 USD laptop to work probably.

Else.. it's pretty stable and is it still stable in one week with no BSOD or hardware faliures, I'll most likely keep it.

I apologize if it has to address the...
I have less problems with playing games on your keyboard....
Typically, for example, in racing games using the arrow keys and pressing two keys at once.
Ironically, on the one hand while pressing two keys can turn off without any problems but on the other hand, reacts only when you press a key ... resolves to a driver or a new bios?

@janik - Did your OTF and Postscript fonts install correctly straight away?
I disabled the ambient light sensor, there are also some power management functions that control display brightness in the Dell Control Point application. I set everything to leave the display brightness alone and you can set the level of brightness in some of the settings, I set this to 7 I believe as this was the luminace setting that eyeone profiled the display at.

I have tried to get more hardware data about the display,
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Everest-Home-Edition.shtml
    screengrab_monitorID2.jpg
Everest shows a bit more data, but nothing conclusive. My opinion is that the same LCD panel may be used in 2ccfl and rgb led with the backlight being different, which short of disassembly maybe hard to know for sure. The 2ccfl, 4400 that was sent in error shows the same hardware ID as the current RGB LED, which is odd, but maybe the actual panel is the same, with different backlight.

And maybe regionally they are building with different panels as it appears that some are Samsung and some LG?

My screen is AG, the item number on the order form was, 320-6998 Black Wide Screen WUXGA RGB-LED for M4400.

Evening folks, been scanning the threads on here for the past couple of days and now need to ask for your input.

I'm after a 15.4" gaming laptop and have a budget of approx £1500.
I had a peek at Alienware but that sort of money doesnt go far there! :D

Having looked at the Dell XPS M1530, was put off by the 256mb max graphics card, so the Dell sales pointed me in the direction of the Precision M4400 with the nVidia FX1700M and the WUXGA (1920X1200) with 2CCFL screen.

Now the specs are all high and having read on here its had a lot of praise. My concerns are that this is a machine built for 3D design etc not specifically for games, where does the FX1700M come in on the nVidia scheme of things, I am fairly gen'd up with the GForce cards but dont have a scoobys about the FX.

As all I will be doing with this is playing games such as Fallout 3, Crysis, C&C 3 etc... Am I barking up the wrong tree? Or would this actually be what I'm after?

p.s. I travel a lot so need the portability of the 15" , 17" will be too large.

The 770m is based on the 9600 gt....it reaches the same results with even the stock Dell drivers and with a bit of overclocking easily beats 7000 3dmark06. Gaming is fine on the laptop but don't expect very high fps....but then again i wouldn't know of a more capable laptop for that kind of money

    Hi all,

I am new here and willing to buy a M4400 with WUXGA display. I scanned the whole thread and first of all want to answer madengineer on his question asked a while ago, if the display port to HDMI cable would output audio. I asked a sales rep of Dell, whether the display port of the M4400 outputs audio and he replied yes after further inquiry in his office. I also plan to buy the adapter and will test it on my TV if the rep was right as soon as my order is out and the notebook arrives.

I also have some weird news on the WUXGA RGB-LED display. Until wednesday the sales rep was able to configure a M4400 with an WUXGA Antiglare RGB-LED display. He also sent me an offer with that type of display. I was really confident that I will get the display in AG as Thomas N also did already. Unfortunately some other options have not been ok which is why I had to call him again and asking him for a new offer with the right configuration. When going through the configuration once again on the phone, he noticed that the description of the RGB-LED display has changed to TrueLife  which is definitely glare. I only thought , this cannot be the truth. I want that display in AG and nothing else! The rep also told me that the article number did not change compared to the AG from wednesday. This sounds like even if the order states AG I would have got a glare one as janik_dk did. I want to ask Dell on monday for the reference number the display has and post it here. I hope by God it is 320-6998 (the one from Thomas N). There is no number mentioned in any of the offers I got last week, so I can't prove.
Now it seems that the display is not available (in Germany) any more or even has never been and I have to choose between the 2CCFL AG and TrueLife LCD-RGB. So I would really appreciate if anyone can post some more pictures of the screens taken outdoors or with a lamp in the backgroud so that one is able to evaluate how especially the glare RGB-LED aquits itself (of course with maximum display-brigthness). I definitely want to use the notebook outdoors, too!
@LPTP-LVR: After your replacement, are you confident with your new 2CCFL display right now? What is going on with the dark clouds in the middle of your display and the light border at the bottom? Would be great if you would paste some pics taken from the new one. The statement of the other users were pretty good but your report makes me pretty insecure.
Of course it would also be cool if any other owner of a M4400 with 2CCFL-display could paste some pics.
@GordonHo: You wrote that you would have an RGB-LED with reference number 230-10195. Are you sure, you have an antiglare display? janik_dk has a glare one with the same ID.

You see, help is much welcome. I simply do not know what to choose any more:( .

Hope to read from you. Bye-bye.

    hi jukebox,

unfortunatly the laptop hasnt arrived yet. dell couldn't stick to the agreed timeframe for the delivery.
the laptop should've arrived 28.11. and will arrive (probably) 2.12.

anyhow, as written before. the order confirmation states an antiglare display. the delivery list a truelife display. both with the same article number.

i'll let you know, as soon as i've the laptop in front of me .) oh, i ordered in germany as well. which options weren't avaible for you?
