Ordered a sick E4310 from the Dell Outlet a couple of days ago (using 25% off coupon):

    - i5-540M
    - 8 GB RAM
    - Win 7 (64-bit)
    - 128 GB SSD
    - Bluetooth
    - DVD-RW
    - 6 cell battery

    $779.25 + 6% tax

Will be ordering the e-port replicator on ebay shortly. Makes me wonder why anybody would ever buy a crappy asus (or whatever) from retail for the same price.

Why use the word "sick"? That looks a very healthy specification (provided it doesn't have the Liteon SSD).

Just received mine the other day from the outlet and loving it so far. Speedy and plenty of screen real estate (I used be using an X61s). Bezel is a tad wide but that is only complaint. Mine did come with LatitudeOn reader, backlit keyboard, and camera even though in the outlet it didn't say it had these. Full parts list from the order is below.

Bought another E4310 from Dell to give away as Christmas gift. This one was from the Outlet. Very strange experience with them.

My order went in with a backlit keyboard and 7200rpm drive, with the order details say they are sending a machine with a non-backlit keyboard and 5400rpm drive.

Not sure of what to do. Send it back? Ask for the correct parts to be sent?

I realize that cyber Monday is a very high volume day, but this seems like a fairly big mistake.

Ordered a dvd burner. Dell branded UJ-892 and it doesn't fit into the slot. There's a piece of metal that sticks up and it's hitting the enclosure for the WLAN/WWAN compartment.

First the keyboard, now the dvd drive :/

I wonder if the drive has the wrong fixing bracket pre-installed. The bare drive should look like the photos here. Compare what you have received with whatever was in the E4310 when you bought it. You may need to transfer the correct fixing bracket.

I took some pics so you could see what it looks like. The new drive (dvdrom in left picture, on the right) has this extra piece on the side that is hitting the left side, inside the case (pic in the middle). I actually took that piece off, but the drive still will not fit all the way. The bracket is higher in the pic on the far right, see red box.

Any ideas? Am I missing something simple?

The extra part on the side holds the release mechanism. I had assumed that it was standard for all 9.5mm thick optical drives since that metal is part of the top cover (my E6400 and E6410 have this feature). I also understood that the E4310 had a removable burner whereas in the E4300 it was fixed. So perhaps the Dell branded burners have that bit of metal on the side and the basic models do not. (When I have time I will pull the burner out of the E4300 to see what it looks like).

I can see from the E4310 service manual that the optical drive doesn't use the same release mechanism as provided on the bigger E series. However, the photos don't show enough of the burner to reveal whether that bit of metal is there. Ind all the photos I can find on the www seem to be top views.

I see two options for you (i) get a standard OEM burner or (ii) cut off the offending bit of metal (remove the top from the burner before doing this). Swapping the top cover may be another option but might cause confusion.

Thanks for the reply. Could you link me to a burner that should work? I'd appreciate it. I don't want to buy the wrong thing.

A standard OEM 9.5mm optical drive looks to be the same as the illustration in the E4310 service manual. Perhaps this (although I try to avoid that brand - they tend to be fussier about their media than most). Alternatively, search for the HLDS GU40N or the TS-U633J which are listed under the E4310 downloads while the DVD RW models in the E6400 downloads offers a longer list (some may be superseded).
