    Hello community

I recently purchase an E4310 and so far I am very please. However like most user report, the system does run a bit hot and heavy, have there been any promising solution?

Meanwhile I would like to ask the forum these questions to improve my E4310

I'm currently running 250GB HDD, 7200rpm, however I am very anxious to purchase an SSD drive for it, but had little success finding info beside the all so popular video on youtube "Adding a 2nd caddy to E4310."

    My questions are:

Can I install an SSD drive to replace the main HDD, oppose to adding a 2nd one? (I would assume having 2 hard drive would cause the system to run even hotter and more battery consumption, which is not what I want)

Do I need a special caddy to accommodate an SSD drive as my main drive?

Will replacing the HDD with an SSD make the system run cooler?

Which SSD is most recommended I am lost as to which one to get since there are so many, but I definitely want an 80GB

    Will this one be suitable?

    Thanks in advance!!

You can, but an SSD will not dramatically reduce heat. It will reduce the noise level, as well as get you a more durable drive.

Unfortunately the E4310 only offers a Core i5, which is a 35 watt dual core. It should be able to handle the heat but i3/i5 are a bit toasty after a couple hours of being on. Have you considered repasting your CPU?

What are you idle, load and ambient room temperatures?

    Hi Tsunade

Thanks for the info, not sure if I am computer savvy enough to repast the CPU, Is it difficult? I have open many computers before but not sure how easily it is to access the CPU on a laptop.

    meanwhile here are my tempertures:[IMG]

can you enlighten me what the actual value is among "Value, Min & Max"

also can you confirm these 2 questions:

Do I need a special caddy to accommodate an SSD drive as my main drive?

    Will this one be suitable?

    thanks again

also is there a main forum for E4310 users? We should start one ;)

Run a program like Prime95 or a stressful program that puts CPU at 100%. The idle temps are okay, but what is your ambient room temperature?

As for repasting, go to support.dell.com and punch in your service tag and view the Service Manual.

    Documentation

Well doesn't look like the easiest thing to do, but extreme temperatures call for extreme fixes. If your temperatures are too high, you could RMA it to Dell or if you have on site, get a Dell tech to your home/office.

you don't need a special caddy to install a SSD.

Dell has step by step directions with pictures on their support site. just put in your service tag and click on manuals, then service manual.

thanks, I took a look at all the documentation and it seems very doable, but not sure if I wanna take the risk of opening a new laptop JUST YET....will wait till I get the results after running Prime95 to see your thought.

Have anyone had a Dell rep service their machine due to heating issues, if so what was the results? promising? or a waste of time?

I would look for SATA II although the interface will negotiate the fastest speed supported by both the storage device and chipset.

Thank John, I see that you are an very active member of this site and have read many comments from you, thank you for your support, effort and contributions.

I think I will pull the trigger on this one
Intel 80 GB X25M Mainstream SATA II Solid-State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2MH080G2R5............unless someone have a opinion on this drive or others, I will surely take into consideration

I must admit, I am bit worried since theres been so much complaint about SSD dying withing the first 6 months, keep my fingers cross that I dont end up with one of the faulty ones, esp when they cost an arm & leg :X
